An SEO Manager is someone who manages the overall effectiveness of an SEO campaign for a company. They may be responsible for coming up with the SEO strategy and executing it.
Essentially it’s a senior-level role ( 5 – 7 years experience). At some companies, you may be the only SEO on their team, while at larger companies you may be working under a director or head of SEO. You may also be managing a team of SEO specialists, analysts, and or content writers.
It can also be referred to as a Senior SEO Manager, or an SEO Lead.
Here’s a video explaining in detail:
Welcome to Bounce Rank, My name is Raj Clark I am an SEO mentor and in this post, I am going to explain three things that an SEO manager is responsible for.
1. Strategy Development and Implementation
SEO manager is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive SEO strategy. This involves conducting thorough keyword research, analyzing competitors, and identifying opportunities for improving a website’s search engine ranking.
They create a roadmap for on-page and off-page optimization, content creation, and technical SEO.
2. Team Leadership and Collaboration
SEO managers often lead a team of SEO specialists or work closely with cross-functional teams. They provide guidance, mentorship, and training to their team members.
Collaboration with content creators, web developers, designers, and marketing teams is essential to ensure that SEO best practices are integrated throughout the organization.
Effective communication and project management skills are crucial for coordinating efforts and achieving SEO goals.
3. Performance Monitoring and Reporting
SEO manager continuously monitors the performance of the SEO efforts. They use a variety of tools, such as Google Analytics, SEO software, like SEMrush and keyword tracking tools, to assess website traffic, keyword rankings, click-through rates, and other relevant metrics.
Based on the data collected, they create regular reports and present key performance indicators to senior leadership.
They also use this data to refine and adjust the SEO strategy as needed to achieve optimal results.
SEO Manager Vs. SEO Specialist
Two common SEO job titles that often get confused are SEO manager and SEO specialist. While they are very similar these roles are completely different. Here’s why:
An SEO Specialist is a more entry-level role in the SEO field as they may be asked to do a variety of tasks, from link-building to technical SEO. A specialist may even be asked to write content for a website. In a company structure, they generally report to a manager, director, or someone who is more senior than them.
An SEO manager is normally a decision-maker on the SEO front and often mentors/leads SEO specialists, analysts, and assistants.

If you are new to SEO, I recommend starting out as a specialist, or coordinator. That way you can work with other SEOs to gain more experience.
But if you already have an agency or have testimonials from clients you’ve worked with, then you may want to consider becoming a manager.
