Google Business Profile Setup Guide

Below we included step-by-step instructions on how to set up a Google business profile. Setup typically takes 10 – 15 mins, but if you have to do video verification this can take weeks. So keep this in mind if you choose to do this yourself. Here’s how to go about setting up your profile.

Step 1: Log in to Google Business Profile

Open your web browser and navigate to the Google Business Profile website. Sign in with your Google account credentials. If you don’t have an account, you will need to create one.

We recommend using a business email that you use often so you can get updates easily.

Step 2: Add Your Business Information

Once logged in, click on the “Manage Now” or “Get Started” button.

Enter your business name, choose the appropriate category that best describes your business, and enter a description of your business. In the screenshots below we have some examples of an HVAC client’s GBP categories and description.

With your categories and the description the key thing is to keep it simple because you can go back and change them later if you want.

Step 3: Select Your Business Type

Specify whether your business operates as a physical location that customers can visit or as a service area business that delivers goods or services to customers.

Step 4: Enter Your Location and/or Location Targeting

If your business has a physical location, enter the address. If it’s a service-area business, specify the areas you serve or deliver to.

Below we have an example of our HVAC client and the service areas they choose. The key is to choose all the areas that you are able to serve for maximum visibility.

Step 5: Add Contact Information

Input your business phone number, website URL, and social links.

Optionally, provide additional contact information such as business hours, attributes (like “Wheelchair accessible” or “Wi-Fi available”), and a brief business description.

Step 6: Verify Your Business

Google will need to verify that you are the owner of the business. Choose the verification method that suits you (common options include postcard by mail, phone call, or email).

Follow the instructions for the selected verification method.

Lately, we’ve been seeing that Google is doing video verification. So make sure that you have proper signage displayed.

Step 7: Optimize Your Profile

Now that your profile is set up fully, it is time to optimize it to make sure that it gives you as much traffic as possible. Here are some steps you can take to optimize:

  1. Once verified, log in to your Google Business Profile dashboard.
  2. Add high-quality photos of your business, including the exterior, interior, staff, and products/services.
  3. Encourage customers to leave reviews, and respond to them promptly.
  4. Regularly update your business information, including any changes to address, phone number, or business hours.
  5. Utilize additional features like posts, updates, and offers to keep your profile engaging.
