Writing an SEO Specialist Resume is EASY – Here’s How To Do It!

Here are our Raj’s three steps for writing a winning SEO specialist resume that grabs recruiters’ attention and makes them want to call you for an interview.

1. Write a Brief Summary

Whenever I am writing a resume I always include a brief summary of my best and most unique skills.

I also like to include some details on the type of worker I am and my ability to be reliable and trustworthy.

Here is a list of things that you might want to include in your summary:

  • Your proficiency with keyword research tools
  • Any coding languages you know( not required)
  • Years of work experience
  • The type of clients you’ve worked with
  • Your working style
  • Your ability to meet deadlines

Highlight who you are as a worker

As I said, I also like to put in my summary, of who I am as a worker. I do this to communicate to recruiters basically why they should hire me.

For instance, I like to include that I am a self-starter, one thing I found was that job recruiters love this because it shows them that they can trust you to get the job done, without micromanaging you.

I think this is great because if you are like me you have an idea of what needs to get done every single day, and you don’t require someone standing over you to get the job done.

Again, it’s nice to communicate this to recruiters!

Example Summary

“proficient skills and experience with SEO (on-site and link-building), SERP competition analysis, lead generation, analytics, and landing page optimization. Capable of meeting deadlines under pressure. Detail-oriented with exceptional communication skills and stays informed on new SEO trends. Technical experience includes HTML, CSS, and Javascript”.

So as you can see in the example, I made sure to talk about my experience with analyzing competition and the coding languages I know. This again is not a must, but if you know any it will definitely help you stand out!

2. List Previous Jobs and SEO Tasks You’ve Done

Next on your SEO specialist resume, you want to list any previous jobs or internships you’ve done and the tasks and accomplishments you’ve had.

Here’s an example in the screenshot below:

Example of an SEO Specialist resume written by Raj Clark

So as you can see in my example, I wrote the name of the company I worked with, their location, and the length of time I was working with them.

I also included some details on the types of tasks I was asked to complete.

Like the cover letter, you essentially want to include experiences based on On-Site, Off-Site, and Technical SEO.

This will help recruiters see you as a well-rounded professional.

For a typical SEO specialist job here are some other tasks you might want to include:

  • Performed keyword research to find relevant, high-search volume keywords.
  • Used Google Search Console to monitor clients’  impressions, clicks, click-through rate, and average position.
  • Performed email outreach to build backlinks from high authority domains.

Again, these are just examples, please be sure to modify them to fit your unique situation.

I would also include any accomplishments, like did you help your client/job get more leads, or increase their email signups?

This is great data to list because it shows recruiters you are results-driven!

A quick tip: I would also write your resume in a format similar to what I used,  as I have found that writing your résumé like this is easy for recruiters to skim and make decisions easier and faster. In other words, you’re more likely to get asked for an interview.

3. List Certifications You Have

This question comes up a lot when I’m talking to SEO jobseekers, do you need certifications to get a job in SEO?

The short answer is no, but it is nice to show recruiters that you are educating yourself and learning.

So you may want to list them on your résumé too, but don’t be discouraged if you don’t have any!

Here’s a list of some certifications you might want to consider:

  • Google Analytics certification
  • Google Tag Manager Fundamentals
  • Hubspot Inbound Marketing

Again, these are not a must; they just help you stand out better from other applicants.
